<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens system having a high resolution, being adaptable for wide-angle photography with a field angle of 70° or more at a wide angel end regardless of a small size, and having a comparatively large zoom ratio of approximately three times or more; an imaging device including the zoom lens system; and a compact camera equipped with the imaging device. <P>SOLUTION: A zoom lens system has a plurality of lens groups configured with at least one lens element; and is composed of a first lens group having negative power, a second lens group having positive power, a third lens group having negative power, and a subsequent lens group including at least a fourth lens group, in order from an object side to an image side. Intervals of the lens groups are changed when zooming from a wide angle end to a telephoto end during imaging, and the forth lens group is fixed to an image surface. The following condition: vd<SB POS="POST">4G</SB><40 and ω<SB POS="POST">W</SB>>34 (vd<SB POS="POST">4G</SB>: an Abbe number to a d line of lens elements configuring the forth lens group, ω<SB POS="POST">W</SB>: a half view angle at the wide angle end) are satisfied.
