The device has a folding element (18) comprising an electric drive motor (20) formed by a gearless direct drive. The folding element rotates around an axis that is approximately perpendicular to a conveying direction (F) of a cardboard box (16) and/or a tray. A rotary drive element of the direct drive forms a functional component of the folding element. The direct drive is formed by an electrical inner rotor motor. A stator and/or a rotor of the rotor motor has permanent magnets directly coupled and/or connected with a rotary motor shaft (22) in a rotationally fixed manner. An independent claim is also included for a device for packing articles in a cardboard blank.
