The method involves coating a contact surface (3) of a plastic prototype tool (1) through a predetermined coating process so as to form a coating layer (5). The coating layer is removed from the contact surface of the tool so as to form the functional elements, until the material of the tool is exposed. An exposed surface of the tool is coated for forming a metallic layer on an area of the tool surface through physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating process. The coating layer is removed. An independent claim is included for plastic prototype tool.
