<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent or suppress water wetting of a spark plug caused by condensation of water vapor in combustion gas in a cylinder during automatic stop of an engine, in a spark-ignition type engine to which gas fuel such as hydrogen is supplied. <P>SOLUTION: During automatic stop of an engine 6 when the engine is cold, fuel is cut after performing air fuel ratio lean control for gradually leaning the air fuel ratio in a combustible range. Specifically, during an engine operation, an excess air ratio λ=2.2 is set, for example.
