<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication device capable of setting an optimum receiving volume depending on a speech communication environment of a speech communication partner. <P>SOLUTION: A portable telephone as an example of a communication device has a processor (1) measuring a volume level of a peripheral environment and transmitting the measurement result to a destination side communication device in the case of operating as an origination side, and setting a receiving volume of a speaker based on the volume level of the peripheral environment received from the origination side communication device in the case of operating as a destination side.
