A portable terminal provided with: a former template storing unit for storing as a former template a user authentication template used for authenticating a user in a portable terminal used in the past; a sensor position storing unit for storing the position of a sensor in a portable terminal currently used; a sensor position correcting unit for obtaining the former template and the sensor position and for generating an interpolation template by interpolating the former template according to the sensor position; a grip characteristic sample acquiring unit for acquiring a grip characteristic sample from a sensor array; a template cross-checking unit for calculating the distance between vectors by cross-checking the interpolation template with the acquired grip characteristic sample; and a template storing unit for storing the interpolation template as the user authentication template when the distance between the vectors in the interpolation template and the acquired grip characteristic sample is equal to or less than a predetermined value.
