Disclosed are a method and device for processing an expired short message. The method comprises: after a short message expires, a short message center transferring same to an expired-message pool, and upon receiving an instruction, sent by a target user terminal, of acquiring an expired short message, acquiring from the expired-message pool an expired short message satisfying a query condition comprised in the instruction, taking out the expired short message from the expired-message pool and delivering same to the target user terminal. In this way, after the short message expires, the expired short message can still be provided to the target user terminal again according to the requirement of the user, thereby improving the quality of service of a communication system. Moreover, the expired short message is delivered only upon the requirement of the user, the impact on the performance of the short message center is very small, and no running load is incurred to the short message center, thereby ensuring the service performance of the short message center.
