The internal combustion engine has an actuating device that adjusts a compression ratio of the internal combustion engine. A detection unit detects the signals characterizing an actual energy amount dedicated for adjusting the compression ratio. A computing device is provided for determining the actual energy amount based on the detected signals. An independent claim is also included for a method for checking a controlling device for variably setting a compression ratio of an internal combustion engine for a motor vehicle.
