A road profile defining apparatus includes an image acquisition configured to acquire an image, a lane marking recognition configured to extract from the image a left lane marking located at a left end of one lane painted on a road and a right lane marking located at a right end of the lane, and a road profile determination configured to output gradient information indicating a gradient change of the road based on directions of the left and right lane markings.
