<p>Manufacturing dialkyl phthalate comprises esterifying phthalic anhydride with an alcohol compound (I) in the presence of sulfuric acid and a solvent forming an azeotrope with water and adding at least one additive comprising water soluble cationic polymers, polyvinyl alcohols preferably partially hydrolyzed with a hydrolysis degree of 38-99%, preferably 70-90%, polyaluminum chloride, or anhydrous or hydrated magnesium sulfate. Manufacturing dialkyl phthalate comprises esterifying phthalic anhydride with an alcohol compound of formula (ROH) (I) in the presence of sulfuric acid and a solvent forming an azeotrope with water and adding at least one additive comprising water soluble cationic polymers, polyvinyl alcohols preferably partially hydrolyzed with a hydrolysis degree of 38-99%, preferably 70-90%, polyaluminum chloride, or anhydrous or hydrated magnesium sulfate, where the additive is added, either in the organic phase separated off after neutralization of the reaction mixture resulting from the esterification, or the top of the final distillation column of the solvent present in the organic phase decanted after neutralization of the reaction mixture obtained from the esterification.
