[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In an electric motor and control installation for starting and driving a vehicle (see Group XXXVII), the driving motor 11 may be used to charge a battery 12-13 which supplies the motor during normal operation. An electromagnetically-operated switch 34, which is effective during motoring operation, is rendered ineffective when the motor is used regeneratively, or as a driven machine for charging the battery, by means of a polarizing winding 47. A charging current control relay has windings 50 and 51 and normally-closed vibratory contacts 52 and 53. It is adapted to place resistor 30 in series with shunt field winding 26 when the charging-current exceeds a given value. When a control rod 58 is moved to the left for charging operation, contacts 56, which short-circuit contacts 52 and 53 during motoring operation, are open, a clutch 38, which couples the motor 11 to the vehicle, is disengaged, and a squirrel cage motor 64 is placed in circuit. The motor 64 is started by the motor 11 when the main contacts 18 and 19 close, and thereafter drives the motor 11 to charge the battery. The A.C. mains motor may be used, as a slip clutch, its stator being capable of rotation. During charging operation the stator is held by braking the driving wheels of the vehicle to which it is coupled for motoring operation. Specification 654,951, [Group XXXVII], is referred to.
