[Class 109] [Also in Group XXXIV] A metal carcase for pneumatic tyre covers is built up of cables comprising an outer flexible layer composed of wire strands and a less deformable central core constituted by a number of thin resisting wires to which is helically applied one or more wires or tapes, the outer layer being yielding, capable of repeated flexion and of low transverse density to allow of high permeability for the rubber and the central core being adapted to resist axial compression such as arises when encountering hard road obstacles and serve as a support for the outer layer. The parts may be made of thin steel wires. The central core may comprise a strand surrounded by a number of parallel wires helically wound thereon or may comprise a number of strands stranded together and bound by one or more flat or round wires helically wound thereon. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the central core comprises a strand 2 of three wires with a right-hand pitch surrounded by a layer of nine wires 3 helically wound thereon with a left-hand pitch, and the outer layer comprises nine strands 1 each constituted by three wires with a left-hand pitch which strands are helically laid around the central core with a right-hand pitch, the preferred lengths of the pitches being given in each case. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the central core comprises four strands 5 of four wires each with a left-hand pitch stranded together with a right-hand pitch bound by a round or flat wire 6 helically wound thereon with a left-hand pitch, and the outer layer comprises ten strands 4 each constituted by four wires with a right-hand pitch which strands are helically laid around the central core with a left-hand pitch, the preferred lengths of the pitches again being given in each case.
