PURPOSE: A rope brake system for an elevator is provided to make a movable brake plate press a fixed brake plate with relatively small rotating force by providing control force for horizontally moving the movable brake plate. CONSTITUTION: A rope brake system for an elevator comprises a fixing frame(100), a rotary frame(200), a fixed brake plate(300), a movable brake plate(400), a rotation control unit(500), and a hydraulic pressure supply unit(600). The fixing frame is a box shape with a receiving space in a state where the front surface thereof is opened. A hinge shaft(120) is crossly installed between both side walls of the fixing frame. The rotary frame is formed to cover the opened front surface of the fixing frame and the side walls are rotatably installed in the hinge shaft of the fixing frame. The fixed brake plate is fixed in the rear surface of the fixing frame. The movable brake plate is spaced from the fixed brake plate to pass a rope for an elevator. The rotation control unit is installed inside the receiving space of the fixing frame. The hydraulic pressure supply unit provides high pressure fluid to the rotation control unit.
