PURPOSE: A device for generating a cartoon style image by brightness quantization in consideration of the shape of an object and a method thereof are provided to use distance information of each pixel and the silhouette extracted from an image, thereby obtaining a brightness quantization result to which the shape of the object in the image is reflected. CONSTITUTION: A silhouette extracting unit(110) extracts the silhouette of an object in an input image from a 2D input image. A distance map generating unit(120) calculates a distance value which is a shortest distance between the silhouette and each pixel. A brightness quantization unit(140) generates a cartoon style result image by quantizing a brightness value of each pixel of the input image based on the distance map.
