PURPOSE: A portable terminal and auto brightness control method thereof are provided to discontinuously control the brightness of a display unit by automatically converting the brightness of a display unit into the preset brightness according to the brightness value of adjacent environments. CONSTITUTION: A brightness sensing unit senses a brightness value. The brightness sensing unit outputs the brightness value. A control unit(180) discontinuously control the brightness of a display unit according to a brightness value inputted from the brightness sensing unit. When the brightness value is more than the predetermined standard value, the control unit converts the brightness value of the display unit into the set brightness value.
