Class 94(i) A device for enclosing a carton in a wrapper of heat-sealable material comprises a wheeled carriage 12 guided by a slot 11 in a base 10 and reciprocable manually to an extent determined by an adjustable stop 26 on the base. The top 15 of the carriage forms a jig for the initial folding of the wrapper around the carton to form a tube with a longitudinal overlap and projecting ends, the wrapper being positioned by adjustable slides 16-18 and the carton by a well 21 and line 27. The front face of the carriage supports folding blades 28 and 29, the latter being spring mounted to compensate for slight variations in the length of the cartons, and houses a horizontal heater bar 14, see Fig. 5 (not shown), and its ,electrical connections. The partially-wrapped carton is first pressed towards the bar between the blades which form the first end folds and the bar then seals the overlapping portions of the wrapper to form a seam. The carriage is then moved to the left to carry the partially-wrapped carton into engagement with the ends 36 of spaced vertical plates 32 which are carried by the base and are formed with curved folding slots 38 and 40. Each plate carries a spring finger 42 which prevents retrogade movement of the carton when the carriage is returned to its initial position ready for the next carton. The ends 36 initiate the second end folds and are adapted to enter recesses in the blades 28, 29. The slots fold the upper and lower flaps thus formed downwardly and upwardly as the carton is pushed between the plates 32 by the delivering of further cartons by the carriage. The cartons pass.finally between heaters 43 which seal the end closures. The plates 32, heaters 43 and blades 28, 29 are adjustable towards and away from each other to deal with cartons of different lengths.</p> |
