The method involves monitoring a time course of an angle position of an accelerator (22), and monitoring a time course of rotation speed of an internal combustion engine (12). Fuel supplied to the combustion engine by a fuel system (20) is interrupted when the rotation speed increases with simultaneous movement of the accelerator in release direction and/or according to movement of the accelerator in the release direction above a defined accelerator threshold value. A gear change is caused in a gear box (18) in presence of a release event.
