Provided is a highly reliable light emitting device that can effectively suppress adverse effects of a sulfur gas. This light emitting device is provided with a solid-state light emitting element (1), a metal member (2) that reacts to a sulfur gas, and a fluorescent material-containing layer (5) that contains a fluorescent material (3). The fluorescent material-containing layer (5) contains a sulfur gas adsorptive substance (4) that adsorbs the sulfur gas, and when the sulfur material-containing layer (5) is divided into three portions, i.e., a close layer portion, an intermediate layer portion, and an outer layer portion, from the side close to the metal member to the side far from the metal member, the concentration of the sulfur gas absorptive substance (4) in the close layer portion is set higher than that in the intermediate layer portion and that in the outer layer portion.
