<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent prolongation of a waiting time for a user due to detection of a pre-transfer reflected light quantity on a belt background portion while moving an intermediate transfer belt around it before a test toner image is formed. <P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes an update storage processing circuit 519 that samples a pre-transfer regular reflection output voltage Vsg_reg and a pre-transfer diffuse reflection output voltage Vsg_dif, which are output voltages from a first reflective optical sensor 130, reflecting a reflected light quantity in an area where no toner image based on the image information is transferred, in an entire area in the circumferential direction of an intermediate transfer belt, during an image forming operation based on image information.
