The device (20) has a cylindrical housing (30) comprising a first outlet (34) connected to an exhaust system, a second outlet (36) connected to a bypass line of an exhaust gas recirculation cooler and a third outlet (38) connected to the cooler. An adjustable valve element (40) i.e. wing, arranged within the housing connects an exhaust gas inlet (32) and the first outlet, and closes the second and third outlets in an operating position to increase reduction in free opening cross-section of the first outlet while increasing magnification of the free opening cross section of the outlets. An independent claim is also included for an exhaust line for an internal combustion engine.
