<p>The method involves generating a measurement signal indicating nitrogen oxide concentration in exhaust gas. Alteration of the nitrogen oxide concentration in the exhaust gas is caused by defined intervention in operating state of an internal combustion engine. Current value of the measurement signal is checked during alteration. The current value of the measurement signal is compared with reference value of a measurement signal stored in a nitrogen oxide sensor (29) during defined intervention.</p>
