PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte and a lithium secondary battery which are improved in overcharge characteristics and storage characteristics.

SOLUTION: The nonaqueous electrolyte in which a lithium salt is dissolved in a nonaqueous organic solvent is characterized by containing benzonitrile represented by general formula (1). (In the formula, X is an alkyl group having 2-12 carbon atoms or an alkoxy group having 1-12 carbon atoms which may be fluorine-substituted, Y is a fluorine atom or a fluorine-substituted alkyl group having 1-12 carbon atoms, and n is an integer of 0-4.)
