The transmission (14) has an input shaft (24) arranged around a section of another input shaft (22). The shafts are connected with respective friction clutches (18, 20). Shifting wheel sets (32, 46, 48) set different gear ratios. One of the wheel sets (32) include a ratchet wheel (34), which is rotatably mounted at and connected with the latter input shaft by a shifting clutch (36) e.g. claw clutch, in a rotational direction. A countershaft (28) is connected with the former input shaft by a constant wheel set (30). One of the shifting wheel sets (32) is designed as a multi use-wheel set. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a dual clutch transmission.
