A piston (1) is provided in an internal combustion engine (10) and comprises an annular cooling channel (2) provided with an inlet section (2a) which is disposed on the intake side (In) of the internal combustion engine (10) and also with an outlet section (2b) which is disposed on the exhaust side (Ex) of the internal combustion engine (10). The cooling channel (2) comprises a discharge section (2c) provided between the inlet section (2a) and the outlet section (2b). The discharge section (2c) is configured so that, in response to an increase in the rotational speed (NE) of the internal combustion engine (10), the discharge section (2c) changes the state of flow of oil from a state in which the discharge section (2c) discharges oil supplied from the inlet section (2a) and prevents oil from reaching the outlet section (2b) from the inlet section (2a) to a state in which the discharge section permits oil supplied from the inlet section (2a) to be discharged therethrough and enables oil to reach the outlet section (2b) from the inlet section (2a).
