Hydrocarbon conversion reactions, e.g. the conversion of tertiary butyl benzene to benzene and isobutene at 400 DEG C., and of para xylene to a mixture of ortho and meta xylenes at 430 DEG C., are carried out with a catalyst comprising one or more oxides of Al, Zr, Be, Th or Ti which have been treated with a fluorine-containing interhalogen compound (see Group III).ALSO:A catalyst for hydrocarbon conversion reactions (see Group IVb) is prepared by contracting one or more oxides of Al, Zr, Be, Th or Ti with a fluorine-containing interhalogen compound, e.g. chlorine trifluoride or bromine trifluoride, preferably in the vapour phase and at a temperature not exceeding 500 DEG C. The catalyst may also include silica. The metal oxides are preferably preheated to lower the free or combined water content to below 1 per cent. |
