An apparatus for estimating an effective frontal area or aerodynamic resistance of a vehicle having a mass, a coefficient of drag, a vehicle speed, a vehicle acceleration an onÂboard diagnostic system and an engine. In operation the engine has an engine speed (input 107), an engine load (108) and a total current power, wherein the total current power comprises a rolling resistance power to overcome a rolling resistance (note rolling power module 104 and input 121), an aerodynamic resistance power to overcome an aerodynamic resistance and an acceleration power to accelerate said vehicle. The apparatus estimates the frontal area (module 106) or aerodynamic resistance by processing on-board diagnostic system output. |
