The connector (1) has a sealing mat (9) made from resilient material, arranged at an upper side of an upper housing portion (3) and provided with openings (17) in a region of contact receiving chambers. A push plate is arranged at the upper side of the housing portion. The push plate is displaceable along a direction toward the sealing mat to exert mechanical pressure on the sealing mat. The sealing mat is designed such that a cross-section of the openings is reduced under the pressure exerted by the push plate. An independent claim is also included for a method for insertion of a contact element into a plug connector.
