<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a sludge scraper, which can lengthen the life of a rope while applying a proper tension to the rope while sludge is scraped by a scraper truck. <P>SOLUTION: In the method for operating the sludge scraper, the scraper truck 1 travelable on a bottom surface B of a settling reservoir A travels by winding up the rope 3, which is stretched across the inside of the settling reservoir A and connected to the scraper truck 1, by a winding device 4, and the sludge accumulated on the bottom surface B of the settling reservoir A is scraped and discharged. A rope tensioning device 5 for applying the tension to the rope 3 is provided. When the scraper truck 1 travels, the tension is applied to the rope 3 by the rope tensioning device 5 and maintained.
