Provided is a head-mounted display that is capable of preventing excessive long-term use, and measuring the timing at which an observer turns the power off before fatigue has excessively accumulated in the observer's eyes. The head-mounted display is provided with: a display unit that displays an image by projecting image light on the observer's eyes so as to make the image corresponding to the image light visible to the observer; a fatigue detection unit that detects the degree of fatigue in the observer's eyes when an image is being displayed on the display unit; and a control unit which, on the basis of the result detected by the fatigue detection unit, reduces the display area of the image being displayed by the display unit, and displays a reminder by allocating the remaining region in the display region of the display unit, excluding the image being displayed, as a display area reduction region urging the observer to take a break.
