<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization element which can obtain excellent polarization throughput characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: A polarization element includes a rugged structure arranged with a pitch smaller than the wavelength of light in the use bandwidth on a transparent substrate 10, and in a protrusion 20 of the rugged structure, a high refractive index material 21 composed of a dielectric or a semiconductor, and a low refractive index material 22 having lower refractive index than that of the high refractive index material 21 and composed of a dielectric or a semiconductor, are alternatively laminated. The polarization element has a multi-layer grid structure of a dielectric with no free electron and a semiconductor with little free electron, and therefore excellent polarization throughput characteristics can be obtained. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
