In order to resolve the problem of low diffusivity of lithium ions and low conductivity derived from the one-dimensional ion diffusion crystal structure of an electrode active material, this electrode material for a secondary battery releases or absorbs the cation of a univalent or bivalent metal during electrochemical oxidation or reduction and is provided with the primary crystal grains of an electrode active material in which the aforementioned cation is capable of moving within the crystal lattice in only the one-dimensional allowable movement direction during the aforementioned oxidation or reduction process and with an ion-conductive material and conductive carbon which coexist on the surface of the aforementioned primary grains, wherein the ion-conductive material exerts the property of allowing the aforementioned cation to move in two- or three-dimensions, and the aforementioned cation is capable of moving via the coexisting layer in which the ion-conductive material and the conductive carbon coexist.
