OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

An occupant classification system for a vehicle seat. The system includes a wire shaped sensing conductor extending from a controller to a location in the vehicle seat and a wire shaped shielding conductor wrapped around a portion of the sensing conductor. The controller is configured to provide a sensing signal to the sensing conductor and a shield signal to the shielding conductor. The shield signal exhibits essentially the same voltage characteristics as the sensing signal to thereby shield the sensing conductor from interference resulting from objects located near the wrapped portion of the sensing conductor. A portion of the sensing conductor located in the vehicle seat is unwrapped to thereby permit the sensing signal to vary in response to the presence of an occupant in the vehicle seat.
