A pathogen-resistant fabric comprises one or more photo catalysts, capable of generating singlet oxygen from ambient air. The pathogen-resistant fabric may optionally include one or more singlet oxygen traps. The singlet oxygen trap reacts with singlet oxygen produced by the photocatalyst. The pathogen-resistant fabrics are used in personal protective equipment. Personal protective equipment comprises clothing, such as and without limitation shirts, pants, gloves, socks, boots, helmets, and the like. Personal protective equipment comprises the interior, exterior, or both, of portable shelters. Conventional coating methods may be used to make the fabric, including knife coating, spray coating, and calendaring. Waterborne coatings are desirable because of inherent low toxicity and low flammability properties. The coating solutions rapidly and uniformly spread over substrate surfaces, including the seams, thereby producing a continuous barrier after drying. Applicant's coating effectively "hardens" the personal protective equipment, thereby enhancing its barrier properties towards pathogens.
|
