PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods, compositions, and tools for facilitating integration between a cartilage substitution system and surrounding cartilage, for repairing articular surface repair materials, and for repairing an articular surface.

SOLUTION: A method of designing an articular implant comprises the steps of obtaining an image of a joint, wherein the image includes at least one of normal cartilage and diseased cartilage; reconstructing dimensions of the diseased cartilage surface to correspond to the normal cartilage; and designing the articular implant to match the dimensions of the reconstructed diseased cartilage surface or to match an area greater than the diseased cartilage surface.
