681,126. Change-speed gear. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Nov. 6, 1950 [Jan. 18, 1950], No. 27106/50. Class 80 (ii). A hydrodynamic torque converter 1, of the usual overrunning reactor type, drives the output shaft 9 of a motor-vehicle through an automatically-controlled mechanical two-speed gear having low and high-speed gear-pairs 7, 8 and 11, 12 (the latter pair identical) between input and output shafts 5, 9 which are parallel so as to reduce the height of the latter, thereby facilitating installation in a vehicle having a transmission shaft or a front or rear power unit- Introduction of the high speed, which causes overrun at 10 in the low speed, is by engagement of a disc clutch 13 by oil-pressure, supplied by a pump 14 driven by the output shaft 9 so as to be output speed responsive, and also subject to control by a throttle-valve 17 operated automatically by a torque-responsive helix-coupling 16 in the output drive, and by a second valve 18 manually controlled but prevented from operation to cause a downshift above a predetermined output speed. Separate dog-clutched bevel reverse gear (Fig. 2, not shown) is provided on the output side. |
