<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reducer for a machine tool enabling heavy cutting by a simple configuration without adopting a complicated configuration for the inner part of a head, and to provide a work method using the same. <P>SOLUTION: This heavy cutting work tool for the machine tool includes an input shaft one end of which is mounted to a shank holder of a main shaft, and to which a gear having a teeth number of n1 is attached, an intermediate shaft to which gears having a teeth number of n2 and a teeth number of n3, respectively, larger than the teeth number of n1, and meshing with the gear having the teeth number of n1 are attached, an output shaft to which a gear having the teeth number of n3 and meshing with the gear of the intermediate shaft having the teeth number of n3 is attached, and at one end of which the tool is mounted, a gear box rotatably supporting the input shaft, the intermediate shaft and the output shaft, and attached to the main shaft of the machine tool, a rotation preventive stopper attached to the upper end of the gear box, and a tool replacing mechanism having a tool shank joined to the input shaft.
