The method involves applying a coating material (2.1) with a temperature (TB) on a substrate upper surface (3.1) for monitoring the quality of a coating (2), particularly the continuity of the coating. The temperature is different from the temperature (TS) of the substrate or the substrate upper surface. The temperature of the substrate upper surface is measured before the application of the coating and the temperature of the coated substrate upper surface or the coating is measured after the application of the coating. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlled application of a coating, such as a coating of a liquid or viscous coating material, on an upper surface of a substrate.
