The method involves dividing data to be transferred, into fragments. The data fragments comprising fragment information are transmitted with fragment messages (9, 10) from field devices (2) to a field bus coupler (5), a field bus master (7) and a cyclically processed program (8) using a communication protocol. The reception of the fragments is acknowledged by the coupler, the master and the program. The fragments are cyclically transmitted from the field devices with the messages until the messages comprising a reception acknowledgment are received by the coupler, the master and the program. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising instructions for performing a method for transferring data (2) an automation system.
