Provided is an austenitic stainless steel having superior surface glossiness. The steel contains, by mass%, 0.2 to 2.0% of Si, 0.3 to 5.0% of Mn, 0.007% or less of S, 7.0 to 15.0% of Ni, 15.0 to 20.0% of Cr, 0.005% or less of Al, 0.002% or less of Ca, 0.001% or less of Mg, and 0.002 to 0.01% of O, with the balance being Fe and inevitable impurities. The Mn, Si, and Al are present at an (Mn+Si)/Al value of 200 or greater. Oxide nonmetallic inclusions have MnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CaO as the primary structural component thereof, where there is 30 mass% or less of Al2O3, 5 mass% or less of Cr2O3, and 10 mass% or less of MgO. The maximum surface area of one sulfide in the sulfide nonmetallic inclusions is 100 µm2 or less. |
