<p>The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device with a circularly polarized VA mode, which can reduce costs and has excellent productivity, as well as an excellent gradation viewing angle from an intermediate gradation to a high gradation at a 45° heading. According to the present invention, the liquid crystal display device is provided, in the following order, with: a first polarizer; a first ?/4 plate, a liquid crystal cell; a second ?/4 plate having an Nz coefficient different from that of the first ?/4 plate, and a second polarizer. If the heading of the absorption axis of the second polarizer is defined as 0°, then with respect to the absorption axis of the second polarizer, the in-plane slow axis of the second ?/4 plate forms a substantially 45° angle, the in-plane slow axis of the first ?/4 plate forms a substantially 135° angle, and the absorption axis of the first polarizer forms a substantially 90° angle. The display brightness is changed by changing the liquid crystal molecules in a liquid crystal layer from a substantially vertical alignment to a tilted alignment with respect to a substrate surface. The liquid crystal layer has four domains in which the liquid crystal molecules have a tilted alignment at a heading of 12.5° to 32.5°, 102.5° to 122.5°, 192.5° to 212.5°, and 282.5° to 302.5°, respectively.</p> |
