The method involves opening a tank shutoff valve (18) in a temporary manner, where the pressure is detected as a function of time in a fuel tank (12) in opened tank shutoff valve. The pressure is deviated after a predetermined criterion of an expected pressure drop. A time interval of the temporary closing is increased after the re-opening of the tank shutoff valve, if the pressure deviates from the expected pressure drop. An independent claim is included for a tank venting device for a vehicle.
