The present invention relates to a method and network device for configuring a route distinguisher (RD). The method comprises: configuring an RD comprising type information and assignment information. The assignment information comprises administrator sub-information and allocation number sub-information, the administrator sub-information comprises a value with the length being greater than or equal to 4 bytes, and the allocation number sub-information comprises a value with the length being greater than or equal to 4 bytes. The RD configured with the type information and the assignment information may not only support massive VPN instances, but also support more application scenarios, for example, support a network using an autonomous system (AS) number of 4 bytes or support a network using an IPv6 address.
