A saddle type vehicle (1) having mounted thereon a power unit (10) is provided with a twin clutch type transmission including a pair of main shafts (31, 32) and a pair of clutches (33, 34) along different axes, to enable a compact layout of axes and a reduction in size of the unit and its surroundings. The axis center (C3) (first main axis) of a first main shaft (31) is disposed rearwardly of the axis center (C2) (crank axis) of a crankshaft (21) and forwardly of the axis center (C5) (counter axis) of a counter shaft (35), whereas the axis center (C4) (second main axis) of a second main shaft (32) is disposed rearwardly of the axis center (C5) (counter axis) of the counter shaft (35) and forwardly of the axis center (C7) (pivot axis) of a pivot shaft (27).
