A layer structure (1) for production of fiber composites includes a layer (3) of glass fibers (6) bulked by carding, this layer being consolidated by textile mechanical methods. Independent claims are included for: (1) the production of the layer structure (1), by bulking glass fibers (6) by carding, laying the fibers to form a layer (3) and consolidating the layer by textile mechanical methods; and (2) apparatus for producing the layer structure, comprising a glass fiber bulking device in the form of a carding machine and a knitting machine downstream of the carding machine.
