Disclosed is a method of detecting domain name server (DNS) errors and hacking attempts. The method includes the steps of receiving (1306), by a client computer, a digital certificate from a server, wherein the digital certificate comprises a fully qualified domain name of the server and an associated first TCP/IP address of the server. The method further includes receiving by the client computer a second TCP/IP address of the fully qualified domain name of the server from a DNS and comparing by the client computer the first TCP/IP address from the digital certificate with the second TCP/IP address received from the DNS. A problem in the DNS is detected (1312) by the client computer when a difference between the first TCP/IP address and the second TCP/IP address is detected. A correct connection to the server is identified (1310) by the client when no difference between the first TCP/IP address and the second TCP/IP address is detected.
