The instrument i.e. timepiece (1), has a push button (P2) to control arming of threshold selected by a selection unit e.g. rotative bezel, based on a rest position in which a recording unit in form of counter is disarmed and to control disarming of the recording unit. A switching unit triggers disarming of the recording unit during arming control of the recording unit and retains cumulative recording of time counted on recording unit. The selection unit is arranged for being controlled by a user or by a measurement unit and/or by a signal for triggering arming of the recording unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for counting time for differentiated phases.
