<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface grinding method capable of reliably preventing a workpiece from being brought into contact with a surface plate when using a vertical double-head surface grinding machine to grind the workpiece, and improving grinding precision and a grinding stone life. <P>SOLUTION: When grinding the workpiece W, at first, the surface grinding method positions a grinding face 12 of a lower grinding stone 11 so that it is higher rather than a surface plate upper face 31. The surface grinding method positions a grinding face 22 of an upper grinding stone 21 to space an interval capable of carrying in the workpiece W between it and the grinding face 12 of the lower grinding stone 11. Next, a transfer arm 40 is rotated to carry in the workpiece W between the grinding face 12 of the lower grinding stone 11 and the grinding face 22 of the upper grinding stone 21. Next, a lower main shaft 10 is moved upward, and an upper main shaft 20 is moved downward to grind the upper and lower faces of the workpiece W.
