The invention relates to a method for controlling a rotating electric machine in an open-loop or closed-loop manner. The electric machine has a stator (3), a rotor (4), several machine coils, and a supply apparatus that can be controlled in an open-loop manner. The several machine coils include at least one load coil (5, 6, 7) for connecting to an electric network (17) and at least one control coil (8, 9, 10), wherein only the at least one control coil (8, 9, 10) is connected to the supply apparatus in an electrically conductive manner, the supply apparatus being controllable in an open-loop or closed-loop manner, and the rotating electric machine is controlled in an open-loop manner with the aid of the at least one control coil (8, 9, 10). The at least one control coil (8, 9, 10) is supplied with an alternating control voltage by the supply apparatus that can be controlled in an open-loop or closed-loop manner. The invention further relates to a rotating electric machine for carrying out the method, comprising a stator (3), a rotor (4), a plurality of machine coils, and a supply apparatus that can be controlled in an open-loop or closed-loop manner.
