<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a base-generating agent in high yield at low cost with a small environmental load. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the base-generating agent expressed by general formula (1) includes a process for reacting a benzaldehyde derivative expressed by general formula (A) with a phosphonate derivative expressed by general formula (B) in an organic solvent in the presence of a base. [In general formula (A), general formula (B) and general formula (1), R<SP POS="POST">1</SP>represents H or a protective group able to be deprotected by heating and/or electromagnetic radiation; R<SP POS="POST">2</SP>, R<SP POS="POST">3</SP>, R<SP POS="POST">4</SP>and R<SP POS="POST">5</SP>each independently represent H, a halogen atom, OH, a mercapto, sulfide, silyl, silanol, nitro, nitroso group or the like; R<SP POS="POST">6</SP>and R<SP POS="POST">7</SP>each independently represent an organic group and may be the same or different; R<SP POS="POST">8</SP>represents H, a halogen atom, OH, a mercapto, sulfide, silyl, silanol, nitro, nitroso, sulfino, sulfo, sulfonato, phosphino, phosphinyl, phosphono, phosphonato group or an organic group; R<SP POS="POST">9</SP>and R<SP POS="POST">10</SP>each independently represent H or an organic group and may be the same or different.
