<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element capable of displaying three or more gradations by a single element, in which a reflectance is high during white display and colored display and the contrast between white display or colored display and black display is high. <P>SOLUTION: A display element comprises a metal layer 4, a transparent layer body 3, a first transparent conductive layer 5, an electrolyte layer 6, and a second transparent conductive layer 7.
